Celebrating 2018 Academic Achievements

“The greatest challenges present the greatest opportunities. How you engage is your choice”.

“It takes courage to stand up for what you believe in, and it is important to do so, as silence is seen as acceptance.  You cannot enact change without speaking up”.

These quotes were shared by our guest speaker, Marion Burchell, who graduated from the College in 1993. These formed the key messages when speaking at our Achievers’ Assembly. Marion’s inspiring journey highlighted the way she always embraces challenges and sees these as opportunities for learning and growth. She believes in the importance of having values, staying true to them and finding a tribe that shares your values. She encouraged us to be prepared to have an opinion and to speak up, even when it seems daunting.

Since leaving the College, Marion has studied at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and achieved degrees in Environmental Science, Sociology and Innovation. She has worked across a range of fields including change management, technology and natural resource management.

Marion has a passion for solving the world’s challenges through innovation and entrepreneurship, and she was the state’s youngest and first female Chief Information Officer for the Western Australian Government. Given Marion’s experience of often being the only female in meetings, it is no surprise that she is an advocate for gender equity and diversity in the workplace.
