Eco Sisters Help Out at Kaarakin

Six of our Eco Sisters recently participated in community service at the Kaarakin Cockatoo Conservation Centre, to assist the centre with fundraising, during their open days. The students assisted Santa Maria staff member Melissa Marshall, who is a regular volunteer at Kaarakin, on the native plant stall.

The girls were wonderful ambassadors for the environment, showing great initiative and enthusiasm towards the task of selling plants and generally adding to the positive atmosphere of the centre over the open day weekend. A highlight for the students was a tour of the centre, which included a visit to the interactive aviary and having the opportunity to feed and hold black cockatoos up close.

Year 8 student Erin Connaughton said “Through volunteering on the day, I learnt that black cockatoos mate for life and don’t often choose someone else as they are very loyal. The best part of the day was being outside and learning about the animals and the plants.”

“The thing I learned while volunteering at Kaarakin was that giving up one of my weekends benefited Kaarakin greatly, so it doesn’t matter if you can’t give money but just showing up and helping out is great. My favourite part of the day was being with the black cockatoos and learning about the dingos,” said Year 7 student Abigale Smith
