Why did you become a teacher?

I fell into teaching when at my convent school in Melbourne, the Year 12 students were given three career choices by the nuns- nursing, joining the convent or teaching. Remember, there were no careers counsellors then! But I have loved every day of my 40-year teaching career. Yes, there are days that are not as fulfilling as others, but every day is an opportunity to provide support, encourage students in their love of learning, and an opportunity to assist them in developing their skills and attributes. Every teacher wants to make a difference in young people’s lives and I am the same.

What part of the school year is most exciting/challenging for you?

I enjoy all parts of the school year but I especially love the beginning and the end. I enjoy the challenge of getting to know my new classes at the start of the new year, watching them grow and mature and at the end of the year, to see their success in the ACCESS Program. They have grown in maturity and confidence over the year and are gaining fabulous results and can see a career pathway for themselves that they couldn’t in Year 10.

This is going to be a long list – Kolbe Catholic College, Hamilton Senior High School, Melville Senior High School, Applecross Senior High School, Wheelers Hill High School (Vic), Flemington Senior High School (Vic – now closed), Richmond Senior High School (Vic – now closed) and Morongo Ladies College (Vic – now closed).

What is something not many people know about you?

I twice failed first year Economics at university and then, in my first teaching appointment, was allocated Year 12 Economics class. That was a challenging year.

If you could choose another job what would it be?

Real Estate Agent. I have always loved looking around other people’s homes, seeing what could be improved and I love buying and selling property.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

I was lucky enough to have a family holiday to Vietnam last year with my children and grandchild. I really enjoyed the craziness of Ho Chi Minh but loved the beauty and serenity of Da Nang & Hoi Anh. A truly beautiful country although climbing Marble Mountain was a challenge in the middle of summer
