Staff Profile: Gemma Sharp
Gemma Sharp comes to us this year as a new teaching graduate with a strong connection to Santa Maria College. We asked her about her new role and connection to the College.
What role have you taken on at the College?
This year I have taken on the role of Religious Education teacher and Year 12 de la Hoyde Homeroom teacher. I also have a role in boarding, which involves supervising study for Years 7, 8 and 9 boarders.Â
What are you most excited about in your new position at Santa Maria College?
I am so excited to return to the school where I formed many happy memories as a student. I graduated in 2016. I was fortunate to attend the Year 12 ball this year; it was an incredible night to see girls looking glamorous and having fun dancing the night away. I am also excited to practice my new teaching pedagogies and discover how my students learn best. Â
Tell us about your connection to Santa Maria?
I am a third-generation graduate of Santa Maria College. My grandmother Beryl Sharp (Kent, 1960), was a boarder at Santa Maria. My mother, Carolyn Sharp (Holt, 1986), also attended the College and was Deputy Head Girl. The stories told by my grandmother and mother made me eager to forge my own journey at the College. I graduated in 2016 and made some of my happiest memories whilst attending the College. It was always my goal to one day return to Santa Maria as a teacher. I am passionate about sharing my love for the College and continue to uphold the Mercy Charism and high standard of education the College offers.Â
What do you hope the girls learn from you as a Mercy Woman?
I hope to show the girls the importance of showing kindness and compassion to one another. I want the girls to learn to strive for their own excellence and embrace their gifts. I know that through the incredible co-curricular program, the girls have the opportunity to shine, and I will continue to advocate the benefits of being involved at the College.Â
If you could sit down to afternoon tea with one person, dead or alive, who would that be and why?
I would sit down with Ash Barty. I know she has had her challenges in her career; however, she has been able to overcome these challenges and stay motivated. She has won three Grand Slam titles and has held the world number one tennis player for more than a year through her hard work and dedication. I would also like to discuss her indigenous heritage and how this has shaped her life. She has never given up on her dreams, which I aspire to do in my own life.
